Lost in the desert

Woke up with dunes singing to the West
and an expanse so large to the east that the sun lay upon
as it found the horizon

it was a welcome relief from the dank cold
for those first few minutes
a shelter from the storm
or so I thought

in fact it was a desert sun
and soon would become
a bitter enemy
a relentless God
carving my destiny with my own bones

the worst enemy I could have had
except the thirst except the thirst
except not knowing which way to walk

If I went South and the air got hotter
through an endless day there was hope that
the brief relief of the evening was enough
not to consider the relentless cold night falling
and chewing into your muscles

lost in the desert
chasing oasis
melting mirage
puddles of doom
